I do have lived experience of being homeless in my lifetime. I got a Street Roots book that told me that they served food at Blanchet House [and] I came here and I was quite surprised by the level of service that I was getting when I was here. It didn’t feel like any other place that I’ve eaten to get food. It wasn’t like a sack lunch out of a window or a brown paper bag out of the back of somebody’s car.

Nutritious meals are one of the most important and valued benefits of senior living. Chefs and meal planners provide residents the right balance of vitamins and minerals – and so much more. The best make sure every dish is made with quality ingredients, tastes great and leaves diners excited for their next meal. Blanchet House provides food, clothing and shelter for the houseless community. Just last week, staff members had to step in three times when people were seen overdosing. Director of Services and Volunteer Coordinator Ami Prevec was one of the staff members who administered the Narcan.

Every dish is prepared, cooked, and served with care by professional cooks, volunteers, and the men residing in our residential program. We strive to serve a balanced plate of protein, vegetables, carbohydrates, and fruit. We also consider the dental challenges of our guests by serving pre-cut soft entrees. It is hard to predict what ingredients might be donated on any given day so we have to be creative with our daily menus. Blanchet House operates two residential programs for men struggling with addiction, unemployment, mental health, housing, or other challenges. Blanchet House and Blanchet Farm are life renewal work programs in which all residents contribute to the community by fulfilling duties in support of operations.

Guests usually line up a few minutes prior to our doors opening but do not need to. Come toward the end of the hour if you prefer not to wait in line. At the corner of NW 4th Ave. and NW Glisan St., the founders rented the ground floor of a three-story building for $35 a month. I came out here from Vancouver, and they were the only place open to do things. At UP, the co-founders joined a social and service club named after the first Archbishop of Oregon, Frances Norbert Blanchet. Motivated by the charitable works of the Catholic Workers Movement, the Blanchet Club set out to offer food, clothing, and aid to those in need in Portland’s Old Town. Clean clothing, hygiene items, and sleeping essentials are offered during most meal services when available. New and gently used adult-sized clothing is donated by individuals and businesses. A Place for Mom is paid by our participating communities, therefore our service is offered at no charge to families. Blanchet House in Old Town is the only nonprofit meal provider that offers hot meals three times a day, six days a week. SNAP, also called EBT, food stamps or a food card, is a federal program that provides money to low-income people to buy food. But many people don’t realize that there are limits to which types of food you can buy. Prepared foods like sandwiches, items from a hot bar, or meals from restaurants are not allowed under the program. This puts people unable to cook because of disabilities or homelessness at a huge disadvantage.
The Founders Café is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday-Saturday. We serve freshly prepared, well-balanced meals to anyone who comes to our doors during meal hours. "It compounds the trauma of being homeless. It compounds the trauma that in truth led a lot of these people to where they are today, and this is something that's not talked about enough." On the Ledge is hosted by Blanchet House’s Emerging Professionals Board, a team of compassionate leaders dedicated to offering aid to people facing housing and food insecurity in Portland.
Dogs are welcomed if they are well-behaved and on a leash. Blanchet House co-founder, Jim O’Hanlon Sr., discovered this vintage coin collection can in his basement. In the 1960s, Blanchet House staff put these cans in Portland area bars to raise money to feed and house those in need. Blanchet House has been solely funded by individual donations, business sponsorships, and grants since 1952. We receive no government or archdiocese funding for programs.
